Bike Parking Cph

Bike parking structures for Copenhagen Municipality.

Holscher Design Studio received a brief from Copenhagen Municipality to design strategically placed bike shelters in parts of the greater city. As more residents opt for bike travel each year, lack of adequate parking has become an issue for the city, especially in outlying areas.

DESIGN

The structures were drawn to fit as many bikes as possible while being space efficient and flexible to different sized plots. They also require a roof for weather protection and must be cohesive with the city. The outline of the structure was based on existing bus stop shelters to keep in harmony with city infrastructure. Since they are related structures, they create familiarity with residents, yet these would be more visible and robust to sustain more wear from bikes. Instead of the same transparent roof as the bus stops, these would be bright yellow in order to better catch the eyes of fast-moving cyclists. My role was not only working with form and CMF choices, but to measure each site and create site plans for each structure. They were to be placed accordingly, as a single or double sided structure, to conduct electricity to lights placed on the columns and to not disturb existing electrical currents and water flow.
